Kitchen renovation dilemma

My kitchen is in bad shape. The home was built in 1967, and when I moved in, my kitchen contained some of the most dated looking appliances I had ever seen. I mean, even my grandmother wouldn't have them in her house. The oven I am sure is the original from when the home was built, and the microwave was this large noisy monster that heated parts of your food to scorching temperatures and left other parts ice cold. (That's my mother's purse on the counter, by the way).

Within a couple weeks of moving in, I replaced the stove and microwave with something much more recent. However, I am left with the problem of old cabinets and hardware, an old linoleum floor, a 1970's marble-effect counter top, and a big hole in the wall where the oven was. Needless to say, my kitchen needs remodeling.

I called over the ever-so-savvy Patti Culton who sold me the home to get her opinions on what I could do to make things look better for someone on a missionary budget. All this stuff is so new to me, and I've never even thought about cabinet hardware or recessed lighting in my life!

Since coming to Kansas City and meeting Dwayne and Jennifer Roberts, I've been introduced to the cool world of IKEA, a super-cheap and modern home furnishings store. Unfortunately, IKEA has not yet come to Kansas City, and the closest one is in Minneapolis.

But fortunately, we are going to Minneapolis for the regional onething conference there at the end of this month. And we are already planning a team outing to IKEA! SWEET!

Except I still have no idea how I want my kitchen to look. Right now I am thinking I paint my cabinets (but I have no idea what color), get new hardware for them, and put in some recessed lighting. That won't so much break my budget and hopefully will make my kitchen look more 2007 than 1977 :)

So if you are more savvy in this area than I am or have remodeled a kitchen yourself and want to give me some tips, leave me a comment and help me out!

Paint is good

Josh, my kitchen looked like that as well, right down to the built-in oven. My brother-in-law (contractor) took out the oven and turned the hole into an open storage area for stuff like, um, well...stuff. At any rate, it looks better than a hole in the wall. .....I painted over the outdated cabinets and put on new hardware, and it looks pretty up-to-date without costing an arm and a leg, so I say go for it....Maybe try those peel-and-stick floor tiles to cover what you've got, or get a couple of decent rugs and throw 'em down to cover up the outdatedness.

I'm not an HGTV employee, but like you, I had to do something about an outdated kitchen yet with no moola to do it.

Nice microwave. If you're "glowing" the next time I see you, I'll know why. :-)

Good advice man! I talked to

Good advice man!

I talked to this awesome guy a while ago that might be able to get me some tile for a really good price... Time to start saving! :)

That microwave was the funniest thing... It had this amazing elaborate venting system that looked like it vented to the roof. Except all it did was vent between some of the walls! ACK!

I say if you don't have the

I say if you don't have the budget to make something look 2007 then play up the character that is already there. Make it REALLY really 70's..Paint everything retro colors and get some retro lights....it be groovin.

Now that would be FUNNY.

Now that would be FUNNY.

Evan, you'd have to like fly up and help me with that or something. Except I probably won't do it :)

But you should still fly up and hang out anyways!

Thanks!

Thanks for the link to IKEA! My wife and I have been browsing the site like crazy!

in person

Can't wait to see the place in person! We booked the tickets today! I'll email you the info when I get the confirmations. In the meantime...a Canadian flag always has a certain charm!

But seriously though, we setup our place with IKEA stuff for next to nothing. You should post some more pics of other parts of the house!

Should I bring a sleeping bag?

Are we there yet?
