Rock, pop, or jazz?

Without question, the influence of secular music on musicians that profess the name of Jesus is strong. Church musicians and Christian artists will name many secular bands as their main musical influences. Before you think I am about to give the blanket statement that is heard so often - “secular music is bad” - I’ll say that various musical genres in and of themselves are not “bad”, and by no means am I advocating that all modern worship songs should be in a specific, common “style”. Taking such a stand is to, I believe, remove the multi-faceted nature of music as it expresses God’s heart and personality. But the issue I do want to speak into though is the influence of musicians that confess Jesus looking to secular music for that “new edge” on their worship music. I don’t want to point fingers or accuse in any way – I want to call us as musicians and songwriters to a higher standard as we write, play, and sing today at the end of the age.

As I’ve outlined in many previous posts on my blog in my prophetic music category, there are two worship movements being raised up today. Both will use music in a massive way to influence men’s decisions and attitudes. Both will gather multitudes in stadiums. Both will even have signs, wonders, and power connected to them. But one will lead many into giving themselves to Jesus in meekness and humility, bringing them to eternal life and peace - and the other will deceive many into worshipping Satan and his demonic cohorts, sending them to the lake of fire forever.

The last thing we want to do as musicians writing, playing, and leading for the true movement is to give ourselves, even in little ways, to the entanglements and snares of the false movement.

I don’t believe Satan has the ability to create, only counterfeit. As I said in this post, Lucifer is keenly aware of the ways that music influences the human psyche, and is clearly using his knowledge to sway men away from Jesus. Satan’s music is simply a counterfeit of the true - a copy that’s been twisted and altered, sometimes even just slightly. The reason why much secular music has such an appeal is that it comes in a demonically energized package that charges our spirit with emotion and entices the lusts of our flesh. It may not seem outwardly obvious, but if it is not directly drawing us into meekness, humility, love, and a desire to be like Christ, it probably is not influenced from heaven.

One of the ways we give ourselves to the traps of the false worship movement now is by allowing secular influences to mold and shape our music. We may get the latest rock album from the popular secular band and say “wow, that’s a nice drum beat and bass line – I’m going to use something like it in my new song for Jesus.” Since Satan can only counterfeit, he is taking the song he used to lead in heaven and revamping it slightly, adding his demonic influences and twists. My question for musicians who would say that listening to secular music for “creative inspiration” would be this: Why would we want to imitate or find inspiration from a counterfeit when we have access to the authentic?

By allowing ourselves to be influenced by the secular, we have the potential to do much harm – from “dulling down” the authentic that the Lord releases through us to actually being an evangelist for the false worship movement.

I believe that musical genres, as I mentioned already, express the multi-faceted nature of God’s personality. They are not demonic by nature. But why would we learn how they are supposed to sound from a demonically influenced artist when we have been given a Teacher that lives in us (John 14:26) to connect us with the music of heaven? What does real rock, pop, or jazz sound like? Will a generation of musicians arise that abandons all counterfeit influences, allows the Holy Spirit to be their only teacher and fully gives themselves to the true worship movement? I believe we’re seeing that generation arise today, and the music that will come out of it - both in style and in message - will far eclipse what the church has ever seen in the past. Will you be one of those musicians, operating in the spirit of prophecy and declaring Jesus to the nations through melodies and songs? I certainly want to be.

Man that post was awesome. Even though I think I have heard you say that before, its so good to hear it again. We have access to so much more in music! Thats crazy man! Cya.

Whats crazy is, all secular music today that is written is based of the system which Bach implemented back in the 1600s. Crazy ay?? So they are actually using the system that was created by one of the most significant Christian writers in music history. So basically the gist is, the secular music industry has been heavily influenced unknowingly by the church, but they just happened to pervert it. I have some more on this but I'm still researching it..

It's all about the Psalms, Tim Cone. It's all about the Psalms.

May the Lord continue to make us consecrated ones who hear the songs of His heart and of heaven and use us to release those songs on the earth. I don't want the counterfeit!

The world should be copying off of us!

Amen, anonymous! :)

Amen, man! Thanks for the encouragement. So, what does that look like in practical terms? I know you might not be able to give me a definitive answer, but I was wondering if you had any practical tips. Perhaps expanding on 'borrowing beats' and such.

As a way of hearing what you're saying, I'm shocked by the amount of people who have NIN as a major influence, and that can get us into trouble very quickly.

Hey Gabe,

Well, the way I look at it is something like this:

"Genres" or "styles" of music are just expressions of God's heart. Satan likes to twist or counterfeit a genre or style slightly or grossly so that it draws people into darkness instead of light.

In my opinion nothing is inherently "wrong" or "evil" with a sequence of musical notes or drum hits, but it's of course how that sequence is used, expressed, and then perceived by the listener. What goes on inside someone's mind and heart if I rip off verbatim a popular secular drum beat or piano riff that they know? Although it could be, most likely it is not something holy...

I want to be skilled in theory and in my ability to flow between the musical expressions we term as "genres", but I want to reach for the true expression of them, asking the Holy Spirit to be my teacher rather than a demonized guy on a stage somewhere. Know what I mean?

So practically, I practice scales, speed, etc. and occasionally listen to some production music from freeplaymusic.com to familiarize myself with the ways to play in a certain genre. But more than the practical things, I ask the Holy Spirit to anoint my fingers and my mind for creative expression of His heart. Genres go out the window when the Holy Spirit _really_ shows up.

It's a fine line, of course, and I don't want to say that I know the hard and fast rule on it all. But I hope it helps you to ask the Lord for His ideas :)

Josh

PS: Fun fact - I read somewhere a while ago that the Catholic church originally banned the tritone interval (the 1 and augmented 4th or diminished 5th) because they thought it was of the devil. Funny! :)

Hey Josh,

so besides worship leaders at IHOP what or who do you listen to?

I absolutely love film scores - they are so easy to pray to and they move my emotions so much!

So in other words if there isn't an artist praising God in their music than they are considered demonic or their music is demonic. I have many years on You and having beenraised in the faith and walked in it and in my time raIsed when their was backwards masking and only gospel, hymnal type Christian music. I challenge you to put away all of the Christian music that was created after 1980's and only listen to gospel music, hymnal... Also no tv, no movies, etc. Because these also have influences of evil and bad music. Then would like to hear from you then.

As Christian God gave us free will, but one thing as Christians we should be careful of is how as Christians
owe share our opinion and interpretation of God and shove the Bible down peoples throats. You can actually turn Christians away as well as bringing people to God. God created the talent and the person which is also the genre...be it rock, pop, jazz, new age, gospel, country, etc.God wants them to use that style, that talent on that genre for him. Some don't do it perfectly but it doesn't make them or their music demonic.

I see young people today follow what you say to the letter as if it's the gospel instead of knowing the gospel. You have to be so careful of your influence. Kids are like sponges and when they are on fire for God they will listen and accept anything told to them. Be careful how you words things and telling everyone that all music
prophetic music is the way for end times... God doesn't want us to offend others or drive them away by our words, that's why we should speak HIS WORDS not our interpretation of them.

Hello Anonymous,

I'd encourage you to read all of my other posts in the prophetic music category, as it may give you a little bit of a better feel for why I said what I said.

I respect you as an elder brother in the faith, and as I said in the first few sentences of my post, I agree with you that it's pretty silly to make the blanket statement that is often made, that "all secular music is demonic" or even "music must be sung as praise to God, otherwise it's demonic". The whole point of my post was to debunk that myth and call musicians and singers to a higher standard of consecration with their music, because music is so powerful that it can either lead others away from the Lord (either subtly or blatantly) or it can lead others into the true gospel and into the first and second commandment.

My intention is never to "shove the bible down people's throats". I am just one voice among many, but I want my words always to be seasoned with salt and to lead people towards a greater abandonment to Jesus as we walk as strangers and pilgrims on the earth. At the end of the day, we all have to choose what we want to believe, and I can never force anyone to believe anything. The truth will always bring our hearts into the most important things - the first and second commandment, and the hope of His coming Kingdom. That is what I want to be faithful to speak. What people do with those words is really up to them, because, as you mentioned, we all have free will.

So if my words in this post will cause true humble musicians and singers that are seeking the Lord wholeheartedly to become offended with God and fall away from the faith, then may the Lord forgive me and help me greatly.

I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to comment!

God bless,

Josh

I draw soooo much inspiration from bands like The Beatles and for me to have to just give that up, I was like, woah!!! slow down, but you have made it easy for me to do so now and now i can ask for even better inspiration from the Holy Spirit!
