Passion Week Summary

Posted on April 10, 2012

During Passion Week last week, I tweeted a harmony of the chronology as recorded by the four gospels, based on The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah by Alfred Edersheim.

In the Twitter sphere where humanity gets wrapped up in movies, bashing political figures, debating social justice issues, and showing off what they ate for lunch today, I wanted to bring to remembrance perhaps the most neglected One on Twitter - God in the flesh Himself. The very real memories...

The pain of misunderstanding

Posted on March 6, 2012

Have your words or actions ever been misconstrued? Have you ever felt the pain of rejection from close friends or family? Though sin and the curse have made these things a common human experience, God Himself has felt the pain of misunderstanding.

Throughout Jesus' life and ministry, there were several groups of people who interacted frequently with Him:

  • His own family (His mother Mary, His four brothers and His sisters) -...

Poetry, friendship, and Jesus

Posted on February 22, 2012

In our day, some parts of the church are experiencing a resurgence of interest in the book of the Song of Solomon. Instead of bearing the stigma of an obscure book about love and marriage from the Old Testament, the book is increasingly being understood as an allegory between Jesus and His bride. Though this was probably not the primary reason for its inclusion in the canon of Scripture, the wisdom of the Holy Spirit is evidently seen in its resurgence as it undergirds the New Testament truths of Jesus as a bridegroom and His body as His bride (...

Growing in Passion for Jesus

By Josh Hawkins
Posted on January 30, 2012

Growing in the knowledge of God and in passion for Jesus is not mysterious, though for many believers the process remains vague, ambiguous, and ethereal. If the full disclosure of God is seen in the person of Jesus, the most natural way to grow in the knowledge of God is to look at the life of Jesus.

The four gospels give every Christian entrance into His life, which is the foundational substance of our relationship and intimacy with Him. Jesus is not an object to acquire information about, but rather a Person to be known.

In this teaching, Josh discusses the necessity...

Passion for the Life of Jesus

By Stephen Venable
Posted on December 22, 2011

True passion for Jesus can only be found when our pursuit of Him is rooted in the knowledge of who He is. If our passion is for a person, the most natural thing we would do would be to devour every detail about His life that was available to us.

In this teaching, Stephen Venable clarifies the need of the hour to know Jesus deeply, and the means to know Him - the study of His life.

This teaching was given in Kansas City, MO in April, 2011.

The 30 silent years of Jesus - what it means for us

By Josh Hawkins
Posted on April 27, 2011

Scripture’s hush regarding the first 30 years of Jesus’ life can speak volumes to us if we have ears to listen (see my earlier article here). There is a great feast of the knowledge of God at the table of Christ’s early years as a growing man. Various facets of His family life, the customs of Galilee, the geography of Nazareth, and the religious culture of the Jewish people collectively paint for us an informative picture of what Jesus’ days might have been like. The loud silence heard in these...

The 30 silent years of Jesus

By Josh Hawkins
Posted on April 21, 2011

It’s Passion Week and I haven’t written here in a while, so I figured I’d give you a little bit of what the Lord has been speaking to me. Since the beginning of this year I’ve been intensely focused in studying the gospels and the life of Jesus. Through my study, I’ve realized that the gospels cannot simply be another item on my Christian checklist. If Christianity is biblically defined as conformity of my life to Jesus' life, than the story of His life can never be exhausted of its relevance for growing in intimacy with Him and becoming like Him. The story of His life is important to...

The Worth of Christ and 24/7 worship and prayer

By Stephen Venable
Posted on April 27, 2010

In this teaching, Stephen Venable (instructor and dean at IHOPU) relates the movement of 24/7 prayer and worship to the worth of Jesus as the one who is most deserving of all of our adoration and praise all of the time. Worship is not a means to an end, it is the end. Before there were any needs that had to be met, bodies to be healed, or injustices to be ended, the beauty of the LORD warranted the incessant cries of the seraphim and the worship of the first man, Adam. God first and foremost made us to serve Him, not the other way around.

In seeking to biblically...

The humanity of Jesus

Posted on February 20, 2010

So often we show up to our Sunday church service, sing the songs, enjoy the teaching and the fellowship, and then go about the rest of our day when church is over. We perhaps spend some time reading the Bible during the week, and attend the Wednesday night prayer meeting. On the busy highway of life, we'll take a brief exit to refuel, only to get right back on afterwards and keep driving towards a dream we can often times never fully articulate.

In the midst of this highway of life rises one distinguishing feature that should cause us to take the next exit, find directions to a...
