Vending Machine Prayer

Posted on January 30, 2012

Sin, Satan, culture, and even a well-meaning church have all challenged the biblical understanding of God as a tender Father, sovereign King, passionate Bridegroom, and jealous Judge. We’ve believed lies to one extent or another, which has caused us to approach prayer like we would approach a vending machine. Our quantity of prayer and zeal in prayer become two sides of the coin we insert into the vending machine called “God”. Almost automatically, we believe when we press the right combination of buttons by praying with the right scriptures and fasting a large number of days, God is...

Pray-Reading the Scriptures

By Mike Bickle
Posted on December 23, 2011

Often times believers say that praying and reading the Bible is boring or see it as just another duty they have to perform to be a good Christian. Other believers see Bible study as an important rigorous exercise, but fail to use it in prayer.

The Bible was meant to enhance our conversation with God, and in fact be some of the main "conversational material" with Him in our prayer lives.

In this set of teaching notes, Mike Bickle breaks down methods to "pray-read" the Bible in a very simple, practical way.

Living wholeheartedly on the road to full maturity

By Josh Hawkins
Posted on March 12, 2011

In the last two articles (read them here and here), I’ve written about how every choice, word, action, and moment of our lives should not end in self-exaltation but rather rebound to the glory of Christ. In today’s potently narcissistic culture, modern Christianity has presented a version of Jesus that exists for our pleasure and comfort instead of us existing for His fame and renown among the nations. The...

Why do we fast?

By Josh Hawkins
Posted on March 1, 2010

Many people across our nation are entering into a 40-day "Daniel" fast starting today, eating no meats or "pleasant food" from March 1st to April 9th. The Lord has given us an invitation to focus our prayers on Matthew 9:38, asking the "Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest", specifically to the college campuses of our nation.

I've been examining my own motives for entering into this fast, specifically related to...

Abiding in Christ

Posted on November 9, 2009

I was talking with a friend this morning about a passage I’m sure many of us know well:

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire...

Striving

By Josh Hawkins
Posted on February 26, 2009

Did you know that “striving” is a biblical concept?

In the church today there’s much talk about “striving” and how not to do it. We wrongly interpret striving as effort to earn God’s love, acceptance, forgiveness, and affection. Rather than fasting and praying out of love and longing to receive more of His presence, we fast and pray to earn His acceptance. We must remember that His love and forgiveness has been freely given to anyone who would accept it because of Jesus’ work on the cross. We were once dead, and it was only because of His kindness that we’ve been made...

Pray-reading the Word

Posted on February 12, 2009

Over a year ago I wrote this post on “pray-reading” the Word. I went back and re-read it and decided that it would be a good thing to write on again, because I absolutely love doing it!

One of my favorite passages to pray-read this past year has been Psalms 119. I find myself often spending 10 or 15 minutes on one verse alone, because I really feel the Lord as I do...
