Jesus as Lord and Christ

By Stephen Venable
Posted on January 5, 2012

In today's Christianity, "Christ" has become a synonym for "Jesus", and "Lord" has become a synonym for "master". But for the early church, Lord and Christ had significant meaning.

In this teaching, Stephen Venable analyzes Peter's sermon in Acts 2. By His resurrection, Jesus was confirmed to be the Christ, the anointed king who would sit on David's throne in Jerusalem. By His ascension, Jesus was confirmed to be the Lord, the Creator and Sustainer of all things, because He took His seat on God's throne at His right hand.

The significance of this truth cannot be...

Passion Week Summary

Posted on April 10, 2012

During Passion Week last week, I tweeted a harmony of the chronology as recorded by the four gospels, based on The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah by Alfred Edersheim.

In the Twitter sphere where humanity gets wrapped up in movies, bashing political figures, debating social justice issues, and showing off what they ate for lunch today, I wanted to bring to remembrance perhaps the most neglected One on Twitter - God in the flesh Himself. The very real memories...

The Gospel of the Resurrection

By John Harrigan
Posted on December 23, 2011

The resurrection of the body is a doctrine held by the normal churchgoer in the West, but is mostly retained in rhetoric and not believed with unyielding certainty as it was in the early church. Living wholeheartedly on the road to full maturity

By Josh Hawkins
Posted on March 12, 2011

In the last two articles (read them here and here), I’ve written about how every choice, word, action, and moment of our lives should not end in self-exaltation but rather rebound to the glory of Christ. In today’s potently narcissistic culture, modern Christianity has presented a version of Jesus that exists for our pleasure and comfort instead of us existing for His fame and renown among the nations. The...

Embracing the cross as a lifestyle

By Josh Hawkins
Posted on August 17, 2010

As Christians, the cross of our Lord Jesus is rightfully the most considered aspect of our faith. So much has been written on the work of the cross, the beauty of the cross, and the wisdom of the cross. However, I’ve been realizing that I have severely neglected “the other side of the coin” when it comes to preaching and teaching about the cross. Not only does the work of Christ on the cross redeem us to God, but the cross demands a response from us as it beckons our flesh into its revulsion and contempt. His cross is an invitation for us into our cross – into the “...
