The cross, inheritance, and the age to come

By Josh Hawkins
Posted on March 12, 2012

There is much talk in the church today about "inheritance". From healing and the ending of injustices to great revival and financial prosperity, what some have haphazardly or intentionally called the "inheritance" of the believer either falls far short or is completely set against the Bible's description of our inheritance. Put simply, we have mistaken our childhood $5/week 'allowance' for an opulent estate and ownership of the family business.

A day is coming when God will dwell among men on the earth again (...

Sojourning and suffering

Posted on March 22, 2012

From about age 9 until my early teen years I remember looking forward to camping in the woods of New England with my church's youth group. We would pack our provisions and drive several hours to set up our camp with the basics - shelter, food, and fire. We learned essential wilderness survival skills, knots, safe food storage, and water purification. The older ones taught the younger ones, and everyone learned and grew together. We were far from the comforts of running water, furnaces, air conditioning, and home cooking. We were in the wilderness.

Yet all of us knew...

Finding contentment in riches and poverty

By Josh Hawkins
Posted on February 16, 2012

Since the Renaissance and the Enlightenment when numerous scientific discoveries and social advancements were made, Western culture has increasingly been marked by progress, convenience, and abundance. According to the UNU-WIDER study on The World Distribution of Household Wealth from December 2006, America and Europe comprise only 15% of the world's total population yet possess 66% of the world's wealth. Information is accessible at our fingertips or just down the road in a library. We ate breakfast this morning and don't have to worry about where...

How Jesus celebrated the new year

Posted on January 2, 2012

The modern new year is an interesting phenomenon. Millions and millions across the world gather to celebrate the changing of a number. Calendars, mobile phones, and checks for the next 364 days will now prominently display a "2" at the end of the date. Somehow this man-made milestone gives permission to so many for a drunken revelry followed by new "resolutions" to change eating and workout habits, most of which have no real impetus and never see any real fulfillment.

However, Jesus is not reevaluating His life, His words, or His plan for the days ahead. With so...

Biblical vs. Western Theology

By John Harrigan
Posted on December 23, 2011

Modern Western Christian theology has developed in tandem with the Western worldview, which incorrectly divides existence into two distinct realms - "natural" and "supernatural". Because of this unbiblical dichotomy, two streams of thought have developed regarding salvation and sovereignty - that God is "saving souls for an ethereal heaven" (float on a cloud and play a harp), and/or God is attempting to regain dominion over the world through the church (transforming society and taking dominion).

In session 3 of the Biblical Theology Seminar, John Harrigan teaches on the...

Living for Eternity, looking for our King

By Dwayne Roberts
Posted on December 23, 2011

In light of the promises of the age to come, how then shall we live in this age? We will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ, and His evaluation of us on that Day will be the thing that matters most above everything else in our lives.

In this provoking teaching, Dwayne Roberts calls us to examine our lifestyle and message in light of that Day.

Dwayne gave this teaching in Kansas City in March 2011.

The Glory of Jesus and Suffering

By Stephen Venable
Posted on December 22, 2011

The circumstantial ease of the West has contributed to a false understanding that suffering is not normal to the Christian life. Jesus often spoke otherwise.

Jesus is seen as glorious through the alleviation of suffering and the display of His power, but is also seen as glorious through the restraint of His power. We glorify Jesus in the midst of suffering by rejoicing in Him, and we glorify Him in the midst of ease when we shed tears of longing for Him.

In this teaching, Stephen Venable presents a biblical theology of suffering with the glory of Christ as the backdrop,...

The universal ache of dissatisfaction

By Josh Hawkins
Posted on August 13, 2011

Why is it that even after the best times of our lives, we lay our head to sleep and still feel unsatisfied? No matter how many possessions we obtain, how many friends we have that like us, or how perfect our circumstances turned out, we still inevitably will come to a point where we retire in solitude and ask “Really? That’s it?”

Humanity has either given unsatisfactory answers to this question or simply ignored it altogether by pacifying our ache of dissatisfaction through various means. In the West where affluence and ease permeate our culture like a strong fragrance...
