From about age 9 until my early teen years I remember looking forward to camping in the woods of New England with my church's youth group. We would pack our provisions and drive several hours to set up our camp with the basics - shelter, food, and fire. We learned essential wilderness survival skills, knots, safe food storage, and water purification. The older ones taught the younger ones, and everyone learned and grew together. We were far from the comforts of running water, furnaces, air conditioning, and home cooking. We were in the wilderness.

The modern new year is an interesting phenomenon. Millions and millions across the world gather to celebrate the changing of a number. Calendars, mobile phones, and checks for the next 364 days will now prominently display a "2" at the end of the date. Somehow this man-made milestone gives permission to so many for a drunken revelry followed by new "resolutions" to change eating and workout habits, most of which have no real impetus and never see any real fulfillment.

Modern Western Christian theology has developed in tandem with the Western worldview, which incorrectly divides existence into two distinct realms - "natural" and "supernatural". Because of this unbiblical dichotomy, two streams of thought have developed regarding salvation and sovereignty - that God is "saving souls for an ethereal heaven" (float on a cloud and play a harp), and/or God is attempting to regain dominion over the world through the church (transforming society and taking dominion).

The circumstantial ease of the West has contributed to a false understanding that suffering is not normal to the Christian life. Jesus often spoke otherwise.

Jesus is seen as glorious through the alleviation of suffering and the display of His power, but is also seen as glorious through the restraint of His power. We glorify Jesus in the midst of suffering by rejoicing in Him, and we glorify Him in the midst of ease when we shed tears of longing for Him.
