Episode 4 - The Gospels as God's Story

Posted on August 27, 2013

In the past 3 episodes of this series, I've discussed three reasons why I wanted to talk about the Gospels. However, the greatest reason why the four Gospels are important for us to know and treasure as Christians is because Jesus is the one true God. In this episode, I develop Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 4:6: "the light of the knowledge of the glory of God [is] in the face of Christ". At every moment, our God and our Maker is the one who we're supposed to see as we read the Gospels.

Watch and Pray

Mention of the “end-times” can evoke many different ideas, ranging from images of charts with artists renderings of very odd apocalyptic creatures to doomsday nuclear scenarios. In these notes from a message at Forerunner Christian Fellowship in Kansas City in August 2013, Stephen first identifies what the biblical centerpiece of the end of the age truly is, and then how that defines the way we prepare for it. The glorious vision of Jesus returning leads to a very sobering peril but also a clear path of wisdom for our hearts to be fearless in that Day.

Episode 3 - The Gospels and the End of the Age

Posted on August 20, 2013

All of human history is moving towards one ultimate end. Scripture tells us that a day is coming when every creature will acknowledge that Jesus is the LORD, the one true living God. The four Gospels give us more than just doctrine about the end of the age - they help us connect relationally with the Person that the end of the age is about. In this episode, I discuss eagerly anticipating Jesus' return and actually missing Him.

The Apostolic Boast

Acts 17:1-4 records a portion of Paul the Apostle's second missionary journey where he traveled to Thessalonica, a large Roman city in ancient Macedonia. While there, Paul preached in the synagogue and laid the foundations of the Thessalonian church. Though he was forced to leave after only three weeks because of violence from envious Jews, his words had persuaded many to put their faith in Jesus.

Paul visits the church again later (Acts 20:1-3) and subsequently writes them two letters of encouragement. In both of the letters, he opens by saying he and his companions continually...

Episode 2 - Distorted Versions of Jesus

Posted on August 13, 2013

In 2 Corinthians 11, the Apostle Paul warned of others who would come and preach "another Jesus" - a different version of Jesus than the glorious Jesus he had told them about. In this second episode of this series, I discuss the importance of the Gospels in knowing the Jesus of the Bible. If we put our faith in Jesus and desire to grow in friendship with Him, we must know Him as the scriptures present Him, not the way our culture does.

Episode 1 - Christianity and True Friendship

Posted on August 6, 2013

In this premiere episode of my weekly video series, Opening Up the Gospels, I talk about the first of four reasons why I'm doing a series on the life of Jesus as seen in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John instead of other hot topics like grace, prayer, or hell. I discuss what it means to actually have a relationship with Jesus and how it must be based on real, substantial knowledge of His life and words. As Christians, we ought to treasure the details of His life simply because we confess that we love Him.

Opening Up the Gospels launches tomorrow

Posted on August 5, 2013

I'm so excited for the launch of my weekly video series, Opening Up the Gospels. In 7-10 minute episodes every Tuesday, I will be chronologically walking through the events of the life of Jesus as Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John narrate it. I'm not sure how many episodes I'll have before it's all over, but if the Lord wills, I'll make it all the way to Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 21!
